With the continuous development of new energy vehicles today

Charging is a topic that cannot be avoided

There are always people who will ask.

When should I charge?

What is the best charging frequency?

How much should I charge each time? Is it 100%?

Not full will meet to damage the battery life?

Today I will talk to you about

Battery: lithium iron phosphate vs lithium ternary batteries

Before we start, let's understand the core of new energy vehicles - "battery". Currently, there are two main types of batteries for new energy vehicles: lithium iron phosphate and lithium ternary batteries. Both anode materials are graphite, electrolytes are also based on lithium hexafluorophosphate. One of the differences lies in the battery "anode". As the name implies, lithium iron phosphate batteries are based on lithium iron phosphate as the cathode material, while ternary lithium batteries are based on nickel, cobalt, manganese (or aluminum) and lithium as the cathode material. The materials are different, and the performance exhibited by the two is not the same.

Lithium iron phosphate battery has the advantages of low cost, long life, high safety, high temperature resistance. General lithium iron phosphate battery fully cyclic charging 2000 times, the capacity is still not less than 80%. At the same time, regardless of internal or external damage, the battery will not explode. In addition, because of the price of raw materials, lithium iron phosphate battery cost is relatively low ternary lithium batteries, and non-toxic non-polluting.

But ternary lithium batteries also have lithium iron phosphate does not have, such as high energy density, high charging efficiency, low-temperature resistance and other advantages. At present, the energy density of ternary lithium batteries are generally 240Wh/kg, the future may reach 300Wh/kg; voltage platform is also higher than lithium iron phosphate batteries, more suitable for "fast charging". In addition, at -20°C, the ternary lithium battery can release more than 70% of its capacity, while the lithium iron phosphate battery can only release about 55% of its capacity.

Charging: do not have to be full every time, shallow charge shallow discharge best

After understanding the structure of the "battery", let's look at the charging thing. I believe that many people have heard similar to "the battery has a charging life", many car owners are wrong to battery life and charging times directly linked. In fact, this is biased. The battery does have a life span, but it is not calculated by the amount of charge each time or the number of charges, but by the full cycle of the battery - after 100% use, it is considered a full charge cycle. For example, if you set off after a full charge, and at the end of the drive, you have used 40% of the power and still have 60% left, even after a full charge, you need to use 60% for the next use before you have cumulatively completed a charge cycle. Therefore, from this point of view, we do not need to pursue "full" every time when charging new energy vehicles.

At the same time, the lithium battery has no memory effect, so it can be fully charged as it is used. (The so-called memory effect refers to the effect that the battery automatically remembers the user's tendency to charge and discharge cycles, and only a full charge can keep the battery capacity large.) And from the construction, for power batteries, the best state is to keep the power at about 20% to 90% degrees, which can significantly improve the battery life.

Therefore, from the above two dimensions, new energy vehicles do not need to be filled every time, and the best way is to charge as you go and charge shallowly.Especially for daily commuting in the city, or short trips, you only need to meet the mileage you need for your trip, while charging regularly to avoid over-discharging.

Summer "fast charging" does not accelerate battery degradation

With the advent of summer, temperatures around the world continue to rise, especially during the day, under the sun, many car owners worry that charging outdoors, especially "fast charging", will make the new energy vehicles in the charging process too high, affecting the battery life, and even cause safety hazards.

In fact, the BMS battery management system built into the EV will protect the battery by adjusting the balance of the electronics in the battery, battery temperature, charging voltage and current, etc. to minimize damage to the battery. Therefore, you do not need to worry too much when charging in summer.
